Sangkaya Ipoh Coconut Ice-Cream @ Ipoh Parade, Ipoh

I’ve been pretty excited to know that Sangkaya Ipoh has opened an outlet in Ipoh Parade this month. I’ve heard about Sangkaya for a very long time but haven’t had the chance to check it out since I haven’t been to KL for a while. So the main selling point for Sangkaya is coconut – the ice-cream & shake.

Just like their tagline – NUTS ABOUT COCONUTS.

If you’ve lived in Ipoh or have been to Ipoh Parade any time this year, you might have noticed the building outside used to be ‘Ben’s Burger‘. Yes, Sangkaya Ipoh is located there. I don’t know what happened to it. Maybe they went out of business or relocated somewhere but I was quite surprised to know they’re no longer there. Maybe they weren’t doing so well? I don’t know. If they’ve relocated, could someone let me know where to?

So, when I dropped by Ipoh Parade, I decided to check out Sangkaya Ipoh to see what the fuss is all about. One thing I don’t like about Ipoh Parade now (after the upgrade) is that the parking space outside near the main entrance is reserved for valet parking. So if you just want to go to Sangkaya Ipoh, you either have to illegally park at the side of the road and risk getting a ticket, park at the field nearby with a bit of walking (RM 3 per entrance), or park inside Ipoh Parade. I think it’s not worth paying parking ticket if you just want to go for 5-15 minutes.

So, when you enter the shop, there are two screens that display the menu right above the ordering counter. If you plan to buy the ice-cream, you can choose from:

Cone (RM 2.90) – 1 scoop of ice-cream served on a waffle cone, topped with toasted coconut flakes.
Cup (RM 6.90) – 3 scoops of ice-cream served in a cup with 1 natural topping choice.
Signature (RM 9.90) – 4 scoops of ice-cream served in a coconut shell with 3 natural topping choice.

Then you place the order and pay.

Then you move to the next counter to get your order.

There are other items as well that you can order like Chendol (RM 9.90), Coconut Water (Rm 4.90) or the ‘Real’ Coconut Shake (RM 8.90)

Once you’ve received your order, you move to the next counter. This is for your ice-cream topping and you pick whatever topping that you want, based on your order. If you order the cone, you can’t choose your topping. If you pick the cup, you can choose 1. For the signature, you can pick 3.

It’s self-service, so you can put how much you want. If you want an extra topping, it’ll cost an extra RM0.50. I wonder if they keep track of the toppings that you put? Could anyone get away with more toppings than they paid for?

I went there on a Sunday noon, so the place was packed. I was lucky to find a seat. The space inside is not that big, and you can’t sit outside because it’s way too hot unless you want to burn yourself to a crisp.

This picture was taken right after I got a place to sit. Suddenly, it was starting to get crowded.

And this picture was taken as I was about to leave and the line was still long.

I ordered the Signature ice-cream since they had a promotion going on – Signature Ice-Cream + Coconut Water for RM 12.90 (save RM 2). No GST.

I chose 2 scoops of coconut ice-cream and 2 scoops of cha yen (green tea) ice-cream. Oh my God, the green tea ice-cream is SO DAMN GOOD. It’s creamy and the flavor of green tea is just nice and sweet, but not too sweet.

As for toppings, I chose coconut flakes, roasted peanuts & corn flakes. I didn’t know at that time the Hershey’s chocolate sauce is part of the topping otherwise, I would’ve chosen that instead 🙁

You can’t put too much topping anyway since there isn’t much space left with the ice-creams and all. They’d just fall off.

I reckon it’d be nice to sit outside at night when the weather’s cool and the sun isn’t shining brightly at you. They should have put an awning or those tables with the umbrellas so that people can still sit outside at noon because the seat is limited inside, especially during peak hours.

Sangkaya Ipoh Parade

Sangkaya Ipoh is a good place to just unwind/relax after hours of walking around, shopping at Ipoh Parade or during a hot day and you just need something to cool your body. I’d definitely go back there just to have more of that insanely delicious green tea ice-cream.
