Australian Food Trail Launch @ Breakfast Thieves Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur
The Australian High Commission, Kuala Lumpur (AHCKL) is currently organizing a campaign called ‘The Australian Food Trail‘. The campaign runs from May 1st to May 26th, 2017.
Australia’s bountiful, fresh produce and rich ethnic diversity has created one of the most exciting and multicultural cuisines in the world. During the campaign, consumers will be encouraged to discover what the Australian food scene is all about by trying an ‘Australian’ meal at any of the participating venues.
The campaign launch was held at Breakfast Thieves, Bangsar (which is one of the participating venues) with the media/bloggers and their invited guests.
Since I was in Kuala Lumpur on that day, I decided to go for the launch.
Breakfast Thieves is located in Bangsar and easily accessible by the Kelana Jaya Line LRT (Bank Rakyat Bangsar station). The outlet is about 850m from the station or roughly 12 minutes walk.
The place is not big but it’s nice and cozy and has the Australian cafe vibe. It has a nice and relaxing atmosphere to just chill.
There was already a huge crowd in the cafe busy chatting. Since the cafe is quite small, it was very cramped and hard to move around. And since I was alone and didn’t know anyone, I felt very awkward.
After an introduction and briefing about the campaign, pictured here is H.E. Mr. Rod Smith PSM with the co-founders of Breakfast Thieves, Brandon Chin and Edwin Koh showcasing the three dishes available at the outlet.
Chef Brandon Chin then explained in details the inspiration and concept of the dishes and also a little of history on the opening of Breakfast Thieves Kuala Lumpur.
Here’s a short video of the event.

GYPSY KING
Citrus cured salmon with crisp polenta bars, sweet corn puree, grilled mushroom, avocado mousse, smoked salmon pate, & poached eggs
Mr. TERRY BENEDICT
24 hours braised-shredded beef cheek in Sarawak crushed black peppercorn, charred cauliflower, crisp patatas, poached eggs with burnt butter hollandaise on toast
LEPRECHAUN
Crisp fried corn fritters with avocado puree, cherry tomato salsa, barbecue sauce & aioli, side of poached eggs with seaweed dust sprinkle
Then we finally get to sample the dishes. I was rushing to catch my 8.45 pm train so I didn’t eat much. Plus, everybody shared so it’s hard to truly enjoy the complete dish on your own and savor the moment.
My most favorite would be the Gypsy King. Absolutely crazy about the cured salmon and the smoked salmon pate with the runny poached eggs and mushrooms. I could eat this all day long.
My second favorite would be Mr. Terry Benedict for its poached eggs that ooze out onto the toast after you poke it. Anything with perfectly runny poached eggs would taste awesome. And then paired with the delicious 24 hours braised shredded beef with a hint of heat from the Sarawak crushed black peppercorn. Absolutely divine. A girl I met there also loved this so much.
After tasting the two dishes with salmon and beef in them, it’s hard to enjoy Leprechaun, a vegetarian dish. A great and tasty dish for vegetarians but for me, I prefer the other two the most.
