Garrett Popcorn Shops Malaysia @ One Utama Shopping Centre, PJ
A short while ago, I went to KL on a short day trip. I stopped by at 1 Utama, PJ to get some dinner before heading back to Ipoh. The last time I was there, Candylicious was about to open on the next day which I didn’t get the chance to go. Who could ignore a huge shop displaying a wide variety of colorful candies? You’re bound to step inside to check it out haha. So this time, I decided to check it out for a bit and noticed that Garrett Popcorn Shops at the entrance.
I’ve heard so much about Garrett Popcorn Shops since its opening and majority if not all had positive review and comments about the popcorn. I’ve only had caramel popcorn that you can buy at TGV cinema, which is quite nice in my opinion. Other than that I’ve only had microwave popcorn which is also really nice if you want to make your own at home… only those with butter is a bit, well, too buttery and not suitable for those watching their figure. Cheap popcorn is not worth the mention.
I decided to try Garrett Popcorn. They have a few choices but I’m a huge fan of anything caramel so obviously I would go for caramel. On the wall they display the price and the different sizes of popcorn bags that you can get. You can even get them in a really cute tin!
Being a first timer at Garrett Popcorn Shops, I didn’t know what choices they have. I did see caramel, but there are also other really nice flavors!
The Chicago Mix™ – This would be a mix of CaramelCrisp™ and CheeseCorn™. It’s good if you want 2 different flavors mixed together.
CaramelCrisp™ – This would be just the caramel popcorn.
CheeseCorn™ – The cheese flavored popcorn!
CaramelCrisp™ with Nuts – For those who love nuts.. you can choose from macadamia, almonds or cashews.
Buttery or Plain – Of course you can never leave out the classic choice!
I decided to go for The Chicago Mix™, because you get the best of both world – caramel and cheese! I’ve never had popcorn with different flavor other than caramel, butter or plain ones so I didn’t know what to expect of the CheeseCorn™. I didn’t know if it would even taste good. It was basically a gamble.
Surprisingly, the price isn’t THAT bad. I thought would cost a lot more but the smallest bag is RM17. I mean, even if you buy the popcorn at TGV it already cost almost RM10 so not a huge difference right? So I decided to go for the small bag. You can get small, medium, large and jumbo. But the tin, you can get 1 gallon or 2 gallon. You can also get in quart. Different types have different pricing, like the ones with nuts would cost a bit more and the classic buttery or plain would cost a bit less.
I REALLY like the bag they give you.
Apart from the plastic bag, you also get the paper bag. Inside that paper bag, you get another bag which holds the popcorn. So technically speaking, the paper bag will help you keep your popcorn fresh for the rest of the day. I was surprised with I took the bag out because I wasn’t expect the ‘small’ to not be the small that I was thinking of. It’s actually quite big. So imagine if you had the jumbo.
The popcorn.. OH MY. it’s not like the ordinary popcorn that you get at normal stores or cinema. The size of the popcorn is big, and the thoroughly coated with caramel and cheese. Which means, each one of the popcorn is coated, and not mixed like the cinema type – you know where you get some coated with caramel, and most uncoated and just plain? So I don’t feel ripped off because each bite is DIVINE.
The cheese ones was surprisingly VERY GOOD. Those who love cheese will definitely like the CheeseCorn™. It’s cheesy, slightly salty but it’s not too overpowering that makes you sick. It’s just nice. My only regret is I bought the small bag 🙁 I should have bought 2 Gallon! It wasn’t enough. On the way back, my uncle and I couldn’t stop eating it until it was almost finished, and we hadn’t even reached Ipoh! By the time I reached my house, shortly after, I finished it :\
The popcorns contain no preservative so those in a bag would stay fresh for a day according to them. Those in the tins would stay fresh for about 10 days if I’m not mistaken? That’s the recommended time. You don’t wanna eat stale popcorn, do you?
I wish I could go back and get more. Now I get all the hype when people heard they were opening the store in Malaysia. I also wish I had all the money in the world to get all those delicious looking candy @ Candylicious! I really miss Reese’s!
