Jipangi Korean Corn Ice Cream @ AEON Klebang Ipoh

Recently, an ice-cream place called ‘Jipangi’ just opened its first branch at AEON Klebang Ipoh. I have never heard of ‘Jipangi’ before but everybody has been really excited about it. Naturally, with all the hype, I got excited too, not knowing what the heck it actually is. So, prior to writing this, I decided to google Jipangi.

Jipangi (지팡이) is Korean for ‘cane’ or ‘walking stick’, which explains why the ice-cream is in oddly shaped cane. Yes, it’s an ice-cream snack that originated from Insadong, Seoul, Korea. The cane is a puffed corn 100% made of corn with soft-serve ice-cream shoved inside it.

At first I thought the stall is at the ground floor, in the market/grocery area but turns out it’s on the 2nd floor, nearby the food court area, not too far from Shihlin Snack and the newly opened Orchid Bistro & Boat Noodle, When I got there, there was a number of people crowding the stall.

There’s a menu screen at the side where you can see what you can order and the price. I was surprised that the price, in my opinion, is quite on the expensive side.

They have two main ice-cream flavors – Vanilla and Chocolate.

A single flavor will cost you RM6 for Junior size and RM7 for Original size. For extra RM2, you could mix the two flavors. I noticed they had a new, limited edition flavor available at that time – Green Tea. Being a green tea addict, I was excited to see that flavor.

I thought the Junior size is quite small and I’m positive not fulfilling enough, not for me at least, so I thought what the heck and went for the Original size. I decided to go with two flavors to try – Chocolate & Green Tea.

You make your order at the counter and pay for it first before you get your ice-cream. Apart from ice-cream, you could also get drinks.

My order cost RM9, with no added GST.

So, the staff takes the puffed corn cane thingy, and put it under the soft-serve machine, which then will pump the ice-cream into the cane, filling it.

Please forgive me, but every time I see the cane, I’d picture SOMETHING ELSE. I think you could figure out what, because apparently I’m not the only one who thinks that. It does resemble you-know-what. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you could either google what others say or just move on 🙂 But don’t be surprised if you get weird looks while walking and eating it.

I took too long to take a picture, my ice-cream melted.

For the price I paid, I was highly disappointed. The corn is basically just corn. It tasted the same with the artificial 2 bucks corn snacks you buy at the supermarket. Just ordinary, nothing spectacular or to get excited about. Or perhaps, I’m the only one who couldn’t tell the difference. As for the ice-cream, I barely tasted any. It melted too soon, and the portion was so little. Basically, after 5 minutes, I was just munching soggy cane-shaped corn snack that finishes in 30 seconds.

Taste-wise, the ice-cream tasted like ordinary ice-cream. I didn’t taste much of green tea either, if I want to compare with Sangkaya Ipoh Parade‘s green tea ice-cream that I recently had. To be honest, I could just buy the cheap corn snack and dip it in the ice-cream and still achieve a similar taste.

I’m sorry but personally, I think it’s way overpriced for something unsatisfactory. Maybe it’s just me. I prefer the traditional ice-cream in scoops. And I’m not that fond of corn snack either. To each their own I guess.
